Ten Tips for Denture Patients

1. Patience – Learning to wear a denture takes time.  Follow advice and don’t become discouraged.  Don’t listen to friends who tell you how easy it was for them.  Each case is different as all mouths are different.
2. Lowers – A lower denture usually takes far longer to master than an upper denture.  Your facial muscles and tongue are constantly moving the denture.  Take your time and don’t worry if your tongue feels strange or restricted.  It will soon accustom itself to the new position.  Learn to use those muscles to help you hold the denture down.
3. Eating – Don’t take large bites at first.  Cut all foods into small portions.  Attempt to chew evenly on both sides to “balance” the denture.  Try to use your front teeth for smiling, speaking and kissing.  Use your back teeth for chewing.  Slice food like apples and corn on the cob first to help preserve the natural ridge in front.
4. Sore Spots – you may experience some sore spots with your new denture.   Please call us and we will come out to adjust your denture for relief. 
5. Cleaning – An unclean denture is never healthful, attractive or comfortable.  Clean your denture every night with an effective denture cleanser and denture brush.  We recommend any commercial product of your choice.  Always brush your gums with a soft brush.  Be sure to keep water in the sink when cleaning to avoid fracturing the denture if it should drop.  Do not use any harsh cleansers such as bleach or anything that isn’t solely made for dentures.
6. Speech – If you have a tendency to slur words, or your speech seems difficult, practice reading aloud or speaking in front of a mirror.
7. Tissue Change – Remember your gum tissue changes daily, your denture does not.  It is important to let us professionally clean your dentures regularly.  Periodically, your dentist may recommend a reline.  An ill-fitting denture may be harmful to your health.
8. Wear & Care – Remove your denture at night to allow your gum tissue to rest.  Since any denture may warp if it dries out, keep yours in water or a denture cleaning solution when not wearing it.
9. Adhesives – WE don’t recommend the continuous use of adhesives.  However, in some cases, such as a new denture, or in a case where the patient has little ridge, adhesives may be used.  Ask your dentist
10. Adjustment – Never attempt to repair, reline or adjust your denture in any way.  Please allow our dentist to handle this important health matter.
